Era il 18 settembre del 2020 quando i Gazpacho pubblicarono l’undicesimo album della loro carriera: Fireworker.
Un concept album, come di consueto per il gruppo art rock norvegese, figlio di un lavoro certosino di scrittura in cui arte, suono e letteratura si fondono a formare un’opera complessa ed appassionante.
Al centro della narrazione vi è un essere immortale, una creatura parassita che nel corso delle generazioni si è insinuata sempre più nel profondo subconscio della razza umana, perpetuando la sua esistenza in simbiosi con i suoi mutamenti sociali, politici e culturali.
Con la pandemia, che nell’autunno del 2020 era ancora radicata nella vita quotidiana delle popolazioni di tutto il globo, il tour che avrebbe dovuto portarli in un piccolo pellegrinaggio in Europa fu posticipato.
Nacque così l’idea tra i membri del gruppo (Jan-Henrik Ohme - voce, Jon-Arne Vilbo - chitarra principale, Thomas Andersen - tastiere, Mikael Krømer – violino e chitarra, Kristian Torp aka "Fido" – basso, Robert Johansen – batteria e percussioni) di un concerto in streaming.
Registrato il 25 ottobre 2020 presso St.Croix-huset, a Fredrikstad in Norvegia, l’evento è stato reso disponibile online per un periodo limitato di tempo nel dicembre dello stesso anno per poi vedere la sua uscita sul mercato discografico l’11 marzo del 2022 come cd singolo, doppio vinile, bluray e nella meravigliosa edizione deluxe limitata composta da 4 dischi (2 Cd, 1 Bluray e 1 Dvd entrambi con audio remixato in 5.1 surround sound e stereo hi-res), racchiusa nel tipico formato table book quadrato con cui l’etichetta Kscope confeziona solitamente questo tipo d’uscita discografica.
Proprio quest’ultimo formato è il più prezioso ove assaporare il concerto, poichè tutto ciò che rende i Gazpacho una formazione unica nel panorama musicale odierno, ovvero la poesia dei testi, la bellezza degli artwork, la certosina costruzione musicale di ogni singola canzone, riesce qui a trovare ampio spazio d’esposizione e d’espressione.
E’ una dimostrazione di ciò che il cuore umano può esprimere attraverso l’arte, ed è proprio questa, l’arte nella sua forma più abbagliante, ad accogliere l’ascoltatore sulla copertina.
Antonio Seijas, pittore, fotografo ed illustratore spagnolo che collabora ormai da diversi anni con il gruppo (da cui viene ormai considerato come il settimo membro), anche per questo lavoro ha lasciato danzare il suo pennello insieme alla loro musica.
Il volto, verde acceso e con occhi vacui del rettile parassita campeggia su di uno sfondo nero, sfidando l’uomo ad aprire il proprio libro.
L’ottima qualità della carta e delle immagini appaga l’occhio ed il tatto ad ogni pagina, mentre le parole di Thomas Andersen raccontano dapprima i retroscena della registrazione di questo live per poi spostarsi a svelare la genesi dell’ultimo disco in studio e gli eventi che hanno portato alla nascita della band, il tutto accompagnato da fotografie promozionali, scattate in occasione dell’uscita dei vari album, ed istantanee di vita “on the road” dei Gazpacho.
Le immagini create da Antonio per Fireworker che appaiono qui sono versioni alternative non usate nell’album originale, e si alternano a prime idee di artwork per gli altri dischi di cui fanno parte le canzoni che compongono la seconda parte del concerto (ma anche del live al Boerderij di cui parleremo tra poco).
Oltre all’intera tracklist di Fireworker vengono proposti altri cinque brani tratti da 3 diverse uscite discografiche: Substitute For Murder (da “When Earth Lets Go”), The Walk Part I & II e Winter Is Never (da “Tick Tock”) e Chequered Light Buildings (da “Night”).
Descrivere l’essenza di questo live è come tentare di incorniciare la bellezza effimera di un fiocco di neve.
Questo perché, spogliato di qualsivoglia orpello ingombrante, il live al St.Croix si caratterizza per una raffinata semplicità.
La stanza in cui i sei si trovano, illuminata com’è da alcune luci alla base del pavimento, sembra quasi una piccola galassia alla deriva nel cosmo più oscuro, e questo, unito al silenzio dato dall’assenza del pubblico, enfatizza ancor più la proposta musicale della band che suona qui meravigliosamente “autentica” grazie proprio a questa inedita intimità.
Il Blu-ray ha poi dato modo al gruppo di aggiungere diversi extra di grande valore per fan vecchi e nuovi: ben 2,5 ore di contenuti speciali, tra cui interviste (in cui possiamo addentrarci nel processo creativo dell’album e nell’ “anatomia” del brano Space Cowboy, ma anche dare un’occhiata a ciò che concerne l’artwork attraverso un’intervista ad Antonio Seijas) video promozionali, una raffinata versione acustica piano e voce di “Winter Is Never” registrata al cafè del St.Croix, ed un ulteriore concerto filmato il 21 settembre 2019 al Cultuurpodium Boerderij nei Paesi Bassi.
Proprio quest’ultimo è il buco nero che ci trasporta dalla nebulosa del St.Croix al pianeta Terra prima della pandemia, un sogno che in questi giorni, grazie alla ripartenza del tour, sta tornando a colorare le notti dei fan europei.
Dalle riprese realizzate da molteplici angolazioni, ai bellissimi video proiettati sullo schermo alle spalle della band, il live al Boerderij (in origine, come descritto nelle note della deluxe edition, la registrazione era stata realizzata come ricordo personale del gruppo) fotografa splendidamente tutta la magia dal vivo della musica dei Gazpacho (la scaletta è poi assolutamente rimarchevole: Soyuz One - Upside Down - Emperor Bespoke - Tick Tock Part III - Splendid Isolation - Molok Rising - Soyuz Out).
D’altronde, come lo stesso Thomas Andersen scrive sul finire della lunga cronistoria della band: “quello che accomuna da sempre il nostro processo di scrittura è la volontà di trovare un pizzico di magia ed un’atmosfera dei brani che sia differente da qualsiasi altra cosa” .
Un acquisto prezioso, in attesa della prossima tappa del cammino di questa straordinaria formazione norvegese.

It was 18 September 2020 when Gazpacho released their 11th album of their career: Fireworker.
A concept album, as usual for the Norwegian art rock group, son of a painstaking work of writing in which art, sound and literature merge to form a complex and exciting work.
At the heart of the narrative is an immortal being, a parasitic creature that over the generations has crept deeper and deeper into the subconscious of the human race, perpetuating its existence in symbiosis with its social, political and cultural changes.
With the pandemic, which in the fall of 2020 was still rooted in the daily lives of people around the globe, the tour that was supposed to take them on a small pilgrimage to Europe was postponed.
Thus the idea was born among the members of the group (Jan-Henrik Ohme - vocals, Jon-Arne Vilbo - lead guitar, Thomas Andersen - keyboards, Mikael Krmer - violin and guitar, Kristian Torp aka "Fido" - bass, Robert Johansen - drums and percussion) of a streaming concert.
Registered on 25 October 2020 at St.Croix-huset, Fredrikstad, Norway, the event was made available online for a limited period of time in December of the same year and then see its release on the record market on March 11, 2022 as a single cd, double vinyl, bluray and in the wonderful deluxe limited edition consisting of 4 discs (2 Cd, 1 Bluray and 1 Dvd both with audio remixed in 5.1 surround sound and stereo hi-res), enclosed in the typical square table book format with which the Kscope label usually packs this type of record release.
This last format is the most precious where you can enjoy the concert, because everything that makes Gazpacho a unique line-up in today’s music scene, namely the poetry of the lyrics, the beauty of the artwork, the painstaking musical construction of each song, can find here ample space for exposure and expression.
It’s a demonstration of what the human heart can express through art, and it is precisely this, art in its most dazzling form, that welcomes the listener on the cover.
Antonio Seijas, Spanish painter, photographer and illustrator who has been collaborating for several years with the group (by which he is now considered the seventh member), also for this work he let dance his brush along with their music.
The face, bright green and with hollow eyes of the parasitic reptilian stands on a black background, challenging the man to open his book.
The excellent quality of paper and images satisfies the eye and touch on every page, while the words of Thomas Andersen tell first the background of the recording of this live and then move to reveal the genesis of the last studio album and the events that led to the birth of the band, all accompanied by promotional photographs, taken during the release of the various albums, and snapshots of Gazpacho’s "on the road" life.
The images created by Antonio for Fireworker that appear here are alternative versions not used in the original album, and alternate with early artwork ideas for the other records that the songs on the second part of the concert (but also the live show at the Boerderij, which we'll talk about shortly) are part of.
In addition to the entire tracklist of Fireworker are proposed five other tracks taken from 3 different releases: Substitute For Murder (from "When Earth Lets Go"), The Walk Part I & II and Winter Is Never (from "Tick Tock") and Chequered Light Buildings (from "Night").
Describing the essence of this live is like trying to frame the ephemeral beauty of a snowflake.
This is because, stripped of any cumbersome frills, the live at St.Croix is characterized by a refined simplicity.
The room in which the six are, illuminated as it is by some lights at the base of the floor, seems almost a small galaxy adrift in the darkest cosmos, and this, combined with the silence given by the absence of the audience, emphasizes even more the musical proposal of the band that plays here wonderfully "authentic" thanks to this unprecedented intimacy.
The Blu-ray then gave the group the opportunity to add several extras of great value for old and new fans: well 2.5 hours of special content, including interviews (in which we can delve into the creative process of the album and the "anatomy" of the song Space Cowboy, but also take a look at what concerns the artwork through an interview with Antonio Seijas) promotional videos, a refined acoustic version piano and voice for "Winter Is Never" recorded at the cafe of St.Croix, and a further concert filmed on 21 September 2019 at the Cultuurpodium Boerderij in Netherlands.
Just the latter is the black hole that transports us from the nebula of St.Croix to planet Earth before the pandemic, a dream that these days, thanks to the restart of the tour, is returning to color the nights of European fans.
From shooting from multiple angles, to beautiful videos projected on the screen behind the band, live at the Boerderij (originally, as described in the notes of the deluxe edition, the recording was made as a personal memory of the group) it beautifully captures all the live magic of Gazpacho’s music (the setlist is absolutely remarkable: Soyuz One - Upside Down - Emperor Bespoke - Tick Tock Part III - Splendid Isolation - Molok Rising - Soyuz Out).
On the other hand, as Thomas Andersen himself writes at the end of the long history of the band: "what is common for all of our writing is the attempt to find some magic and an atmosphere that is different” .
A precious purchase, waiting for the next stage of the journey of this extraordinary Norwegian formation.
