Verso la fine degli anni '70, iniziò a diffondersi un'ondata musicale fortemente ispirata al garage rock e alla psichedelia degli anni '60. Questo fenomeno è dovuto a molti fattori cominciava a manifestare la disillusione nei confronti delle regole restrittive del punk rock, il passare del tempo affinché l'epoca sembrasse glamour, la possibilità di trovare materiale vintage a basso costo. Il risultato fu un underground che si evolse in molte direzioni interessanti e che in momenti diversi si spinse persino verso l'underground.
La raccolta del 2026 di Cherry Red Records, "This Can't Be Today: American Psychedelia & the Paisley Underground 1977-1988", si propone di documentare la scena, riunendo i molteplici filoni e suoni dell'epoca per offrire una visione completa.
Il Paisley Underground fondeva lo spirito del punk rock con un sound che attingeva ampiamente al rock degli anni '60.
Lungo il lungo percorso di questo cofanetto ideale, si incontrano istantanee delle band underground con motivi paisley, una buona dose di garage rocker sprezzanti, appassionati di jangle a 12 corde, vagabondi psichedelici contorti, musicisti new wave e anteprime di alcuni futuri nomi da classifica.
Sono presenti quasi tutti i nomi che ci si aspetterebbe e a parte qualche comprensibile omissione, la raccolta seleziona ottimi brani dei grandi nomi della scena. "Gardening at Night" dei R.E.M. spiega ampiamente il fascino del loro sound oscuro e misterioso degli esordi, "What She's Done to Your Mind" dei Rain Parade è un perfetto jangle alla Baby Byrds, "Euphoric Trapdoor Shoes" dei Plasticland è una psichedelia garage folle che cattura la loro brillantezza sarcastica, "Regenisraen" dei Game Theory è un sogno acustico splendidamente barocco, i Dream Syndicate sfoggiano le loro doti dal vivo in una versione squilibrata di "Sure Thing" registrata per una sessione radiofonica, e "With You" dei Flaming Lips è un brano dinamico di un rumore autodistruttivo e goffo degli esordi.
Ascoltare tutto di un fiato "This Can't Be Today: American Psychedelia & the Paisley Underground 1977-1988" fa riflettere su quanto sia stato esaltante, e a tratti estenuante soprattutto per le tasche di chi doveva correre ogni due giorni a comprare dischi meravigliosi, essere stato un fan dell'indie rock degli anni '80
