Scrivere la storia di Josh Homme e delle sue avventure musicali non è nostra intenzione. Vogliamo solo riassumere, grazie al dono della sintesi, le molteplici collaborazioni dal 1988 ad oggi, che ne hanno decretato lo status di musicista faro del nuovo millennio. Superati i 17 anni di musica ad alto voltaggio, questo è dunque un semplice omaggio sentito e dovuto, augurando ad Homme e compagni altri 170 anni di codesto tenore.
1988 - A Palm Springs tra i corridoi della High School nascono i KATZENJAMMER formati da quattro amici che rispondono al nome di John Garcia (voce), Josh Homme (17/05/1973, chitarra), Chris Cockrell (basso) e Brant Bjork (batteria).

1990 - Diventano SONS OF KYUSS prendendo il nome dal popolare gioco "Dungeons & Dragons". Realizzano un vinile omonimo (molto raro) e molti dei brani presenti nel disco finiranno nel debutto dei Kyuss "Wretch". Nella track list l'ultimo brano è intitolato "Katzenjammer".

1991 - Con Nick Olivieri al posto di Cockrell i KYUSS esordiscono con il ruvido "Wretch" (Dali Records).
1992 - La stessa line up dà alle stampe il monolite "Blues For The Red Sun" che si avvale della produzione di Chris Goss guru dei Masters Of Reality. Vanno in tour con Danzig, Faith No More e Metallica.
1994 - Olivieri lascia il gruppo per entrare nei lascivi Dwarves, la Dali va in bancarotta, l'Elektra arriva tempestiva e Scott Reeder (dagli Obsessed) entra per registrare un altro masterpiece ("Sky Valley") sempre con la produzione di Goss.
1995 - Alfredo Hernandez entra per il dimissionario Bjork e i Kyuss varano l'epitaffio "... And The Circus Leaves Town".

1996 - Homme si trasferisce a Seattle dove collabora con gli Screaming Trees (supporta molti dei loro tour). Comincia a produrre le Desert Session e forma i GAMMA RAY che inizialmente comprendono John McBain (Monster Magnet, Wellwater Conspiracy ed oggi autore del suo primo album solista per la Duna di Brant Bjork), Van Conner (Screaming Trees) e Matt Cameron (Soundgarden). Ma il copyright detenuto dalla power metal band di Mr. Hansen costringe i nostri a cambiare nome. Rimane agli archivi un 7 pollici omonimo che all'interno riporta la frase: "READ THIS : This is the Gamma ray featuring Josh HOMME of KYUSS fame. It is NOT that guy from HELLOWEEN or whatever".
1997 - Nascono i QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE.

2006 - "Tunnelvision Brilliance"
1998 - Prima release lo split con i Beaver con due brani: "The Bronze" e "These Aren't The Droids You're Looking For". Esce l'esordio omonimo per la Loosegroove Records. Olivieri compare nella foto sul retro album ma non suona nel disco. Alla batteria c'è l'amico Hernandez ma di fatto è il solo Homme a menare le danze con l'aiuto di tale Carlo al basso. Per due anni gira nella band anche Dave Catching (Earthlings?, Fu Manchu, Goatsnake) per un tour sostituito da Mario Lalli.

2000 - Esce il secondo splendido "R". Alcune copie promozionali vengono editate con il titolo originale "II". Ora la line up comprende Nick Olivieri, Gene Troutmann alla batteria (ex Miracle Workers, Mouth, Anesthesia, Dig) e una serie di musicisti che si alterneranno anche in seguito (vedi ad esempio Nicky Lucero).

2002 - Arriva il capolavoro "Songs For The Deaf" e la line up sempre in movimento comprende ora Troy Van Leuween (ex Enemy, Failure, A Perfect Circle), Mark Lanegan, Dean Ween e Dave Grohl. Inoltre orbita anche Brendan McNichol (lapsteel/guitar piano) già collaboratore nelle Desert Session, Masters Of Reality, Levi Chen, Dwarves, Quantum Dub Force, Drone, Trip Shive e 6-Toes Hound.
Le collaborazioni diventano copiose. Homme e Olivieri danno vita al progetto HEADBAND che dovrebbe comprendere anche l'ex Marilyn Manson Twiggy Ramirez e Casey Chaos frontman degli Amen. Ma la rinuncia di quest'ultimo farà naufragare il tutto. Nel 2004 Homme suona la batteria per gli Eagles Of Death Metal dell'amico Jesse Hughes.

Nick Olivieri & QOTSA questo recita la firma della cover "Jealous Again" presente nel disco "Rise Above: Black Flag Tribute" (2002). Un anno prima eccoli comparire invece con "Back To Dungaree High" nell'album tributo "Alpha Motherfuckers: A Tribute To Turbonegro"
