Aveva appena finito di combattere una lunga battaglia contro un’infezione al fegato, quando un tumore lo ha assalito proprio pochi giorni fa, alla fine di Dicembre. È morto ieri alle 4,00 del pomeriggio a 70 anni di età nella sua casa di Los Angeles Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Kilmister. Era nato nello Staffordshire nel 1945 e nel 1965, dopo essere stato “illuminato” musicalmente dai Beatles, aveva fatto parte dei The Rockin’ Vickers (col nome Ian Willis), due anni dopo il trasferimento a Londra, l’incontro con Noel Redding ed un lavoro da roadie per la Jimi Hendrix Experience. Poi la psichedelia del primo album dei Sam Gopal e quella degli Opal Butterfly. Nel 1972 ecco gli Hawkwind e nel 1975, dopo una parentesi con la band di Robert Calvert, nascono i Motorhead (inizialmente chiamati Bastard).
Questo il comunicato ufficiale della sua band, dei Motorhead :
«There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made it’s way down the street, with his family. We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words. We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD. Have a drink or few. Share stories. Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.. HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT!”».
Pochi mesi fa alla fine dell’estate i Motorhead avevavo pubblicato “Bad Magic”, quello che si capiva sarebbe stato l’ultimo disco di Lemmy. Forse non il migliore album della loro lunga storia, ma un gran bel disco di Hard Rock vecchio stile, sporco , veloce, senza compromessi, diritto al bersaglio, come era solito fare l’uomo, il musicista che è riuscito a soddisfare (unico nella storia) sia i fans dell’Heavy Metal e i Punk Rockers.
Questo il testo integrale di “Till The End” , una rock ballad inserita nell’ultimo disco che è anche il suo testamento personale, il suo lascito, a quanti lo hanno seguito in concerto dal vivo, su disco, a quanti lo hanno amato e troveranno difficile stare al mondo senza di lui:
