Celebrazione della musica dei Grateful Dead, ”Day of the Dead” è stata creata e curata dai fratelli Aaron e Bryce Dessner dei The National.
Per entrambi, Aaron e Bryce, i Grateful Dead contribuirono al nascere della loro passione per la musica e del piacere di suonare insieme; è stata la prima musica che i fratelli hanno esplorato a fondo. I due ricordano la loro prima jam session, a 14 anni con il futuro batterista dei The National Bryan Devendorf, quando suonarono per diverse ore “Eyes of the World” dei Dead nella soffitta di Bryan alla periferia di Ohio. I fratelli Dessner erano attratti non solo dal songwriting dei Dead ma anche dalla cura del dettaglio, dalla spontaneità e dalla profondità nella strumentazione.
In quegli anni dell'adolescenza è nata una vera storia d'amore durata tutta la vita, quella con i Dead (condivisa con i Devendorfs), che ha raggiunto il suo apice quando i The National sono stati invitati a suonare con Bob Weir, nel marzo 2012, alla raccolta fondi per HeadCount.org. La band radunata per questo evento ha imparato 25 canzoni dei Grateful Dead e la maggior parte di questi musicisti è entrato a far parte della "house band" che ha suonato in molti brani di “Day of the Dead”.
Prodotta da Aaron Dessner, co-prodotta da Bryce Dessner e Josh Kaufman, la raccolta è un omaggio ad ampio raggio al songwriting e allo sperimentalismo dei Dead; 59 tracce per quasi 6 ore di musica dei Dead. Alla registrazione, durata quattro anni, hanno collaborato oltre 60 artisti provenienti da varie esperienze musicali. Su molti brani compare la “house band” di grandi musicisti formata da Aaron, Bryce, i compagni di band (The National) e fratelli Scott e Bryan Devendorf, Josh Kaufman e Conrad Doucette insieme a Sam Cohen e Walter Martin.
“Day of the Dead” uscirà il 20 maggio 2016 in versione digitale e CD (x5). Nel corso dell’anno uscirà anche un’edizione limitata su vinile. Tutti i proventi andranno alla Red Hot Organization, organizzazione benefica internazionale dedicata alla raccolta di fondi per combattere l’AIDS/ HIV. Questo è il 20 ° album di musica originale prodotto da Red Hot per promuovere la sua missione. Con la precedente raccolta del 2009, Dark Was The Night (4AD) compilation di 32 tracce sempre prodotta da Aaron e Bryce Dessner, Red Hot ha raccolto finora oltre 1,5 milioni di dollari per le organizzazioni che combattono l'Aids.
